Lotus Photography Exhibit

I first met Helga in writing workshop with Junie Swadron (fantastic workshop–highly recommended). She’d brought with her some of her photography which really intrigued me. In fact, the images affected me so much, that I decided to name one of my communication courses after it! I hadn’t told Helga about this. Now here’s the synchronicity: last week, Helga dropped off one of exquisite lotus photographs to us at Hernande’z. Soon you will be able to see it, framed and matted–at our Little Fernwood School of the Arts–but in the meantime, her photographs are on exhibit at the Langham Theatre from 12 noon to 10 pm daily until this Saturday. 805 Langham Court. For those of you who don’t want to venture out, go ahead and see her work at www.helgahendricks.com.

Helga Hendricks’ photography is truly intuitive.  Her art creates an emotional impact on the receiver.  At times breathtaking, always inspiring.  Her use of natural light with her lotus photographs seem other worldly.  Helga captures the spirit of a place. We are transported, perceiving, touched by what she sees through her lens. She paints masterpieces on the canvases of the digital images.  We are drawn in, wanting to know more of the place, the time, the emotion, how it impacted her, as she shares with us in striking vulnerability.

If you are truly blessed, you will have an opportunity to hear her describe how the photograph came about.  What she was doing immediately prior to capturing the image.  What was her intent as she journeyed out in the early morning to visit Balinese temples.  Lying in the dew covered grass waiting for the light be just so, seeing a lotus with hands raised up in a ‘Morning Prayer’.  Helga has blessed us all with her gifts.  May she continue to share her art, an extension of the who she is, with the world to know more of the beauty that surrounds us all.

I will continue to sing her praises.
